Congratulatons! You have made the final step. From foster care to adoption, you have decided to provide a permanent, loving family home to your child(ren).
No doubt you are feeling a range of emotions from doubt to exhilaration. Am I making the right decision for my family? How do I work with the birth family? Or perhaps it is a closed adoption and now, how do we support the child who may have unresolved issues regarding this final loss of birth family. Your child is also experiencing a range of emotions from guilt to joy. The finality of adoption says to the child, “this proves, they really want me.” Or “I belong.” How a child processes the event may be completely different from their siblings and other family members.
Why did my child become depressed after the adoption? I thought he’d be happy or why are my biological children suddenly acting out? A skilled and experienced therapist can help fill in the pieces. Transition in this phase can be unpredictable. We’re hear to help.
